The Building Department is responsible for maintaining and tracking permits issued for all new construction, alterations, additions, repairs, and demolitions, along with inspecting all building projects to assure compliance with the Bedford Heights Building Code. We are known for our impeccable reputation for being well organized and timely with both permits and inspections.
The Building Commissioner shall hold and maintain a Class I Chief Building Official Certification and a valid Ohio driver’s license.
The Building Code Inspectors and Part-time Code Inspectors shall be charged with the duty of enforcement of any maintenance code legislation adopted by the City and shall hold and maintain a Class III Building Inspector or Residential Building Inspector Certification and an Electrical Safety or Plumbing Inspector or Residential Plumbing Inspector Certification or both (or be able to obtain such Certifications within twelve months of hire with an approved interim certification) and a valid Ohio driver’s license.
The full-time Multi-Family and Property Maintenance Inspector shall be charged with the duty and enforcement of the Apartment Maintenance Code as well as all other City housing maintenance codes as directed and supervised by the Building Commissioner and shall hold and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license. Said position shall be in the unclassified service. The full-time Multi-Family and Property Maintenance Inspector shall assist the Building Commissioner in the discharge of his duties and shall perform such acts as are necessary and proper to maintain and improve compliance with City housing maintenance codes under the direction of the Building Commissioner. The full-time Multi-Family and Property Maintenance Inspector shall also perform the following duties:
Inventory City housing stock and perform exterior maintenance inspection of vacant and/or foreclosed homes (high grass, trash, broken windows, etc.);
Enforce exterior maintenance codes throughout the City regarding grass- cutting, trash clean-up, etc. (complaints) in the residential areas of the City;
Enforce the City’s real estate, political, and advertising sign requirements (such as on telephone poles, tree lawns, etc.);
Perform other duties as required by the Building Commissioner or Mayor in regard to the enforcement of the City’s housing maintenance codes.
The Building Secretary and full-time Clerk/Secretary shall perform such duties as required by the Building Commissioner.
The Building Commissioner or a Building Code Inspector shall be certified as a Residential Building Official.
The Building Department is now accepting credit card payments in person for any fees collected in the Building Department. These include building permits, contractor registration, point of sale inspections for commercial and residential, occupancy permits, garage sales, apartment inspection fees, Planning, Zoning and Architecture Board of Review fees, etc.
